Resumo: In this paper, a relation is traced between a nineteenth-century edition of sermons of Father Antonio Vieira, The Portuguese Chrysostom (1878-90), organized by Father Antonio Onorati, and Vieira's reception at that time, especially since the commentaries of António Feliciano Castilho and Camilo Castelo Branco, who compared him unfavorably to Father Manuel Bernardes. Based on the analysis of the changes promoted by Onorati in the "Sermão da Sexagésima", we propose The Portuguese Chrysostom as an intervention in the public sphere of its time, portraying Vieira as a model of sacred oratory, in response to the preference for Bernardes' prose that was then being consolidated.
