Resumo: The historiography of the nineteenth century represents an important means for the understanding of liberal thoughts in Brazil. From the contradiction between ideas and the politics of the Empire, historical interpretations developed and these see the past as a battle between freedom and opression and this continues until the present. This policy was neither isolated nor preponderant. What we mean by an historiographic analisis, is the liberal thought of the author’s social group.
