Resumo: Uma leitura atenta de Women Artists in all Ages and Countries (1859) e English Female Artists (1876) demonstra que Elizabeth Ellet e Ellen Clayton não se limitam a endossar categorias patriarcais sobre a produção artística feminina. Ao contrário, suas compilações biográficas problematizam algumas temáticas gerais, tais como condições de vida e de educação, existência de um estilo “feminino”, dentre outras. O panorama que tais obras oferecem é bem variado e contribui para trazer à luz muitos nomes pouco conhecidos e para celebrar o papel das mulheres na história da arte.

Al contrario, sus compilaciones biográficas cuestionan algunos temas generales, tales como condiciones de vida y de educación de las mujeres, la existencia de un estilo “femenino”, entre otros. El panorama que tales obras ofrecen es muy variado y contribuye para sacar a la luz muchos nombres poco conocidos y para celebrar el rol de las mujeres en la historia del arte. An accurate reading of Women Artists in all Ages and Countries (1859) and English Female Artists (1876) shows that Elizabeth Ellet and Ellen Clayton don’t restrict themselves to endorse patriarchal categories about female artistic production. On the contrary, their biographical compilations problematize some general issues, such as women’s life conditions and education, the existence of a “feminine” style, among others. The broad view offered by both books is very variegated and contributes to bring to light many names almost unknown and celebrate the role of women in the History of Art. Universidade de São Paulo.
