Resumo: Blood samples from 106 stray dogs of São Paulo City were examined to detect Babesia canis. Rosenfeld stained blood smears and the immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT) were the techniques used for diagnosis. The first technique showed that 10.3% of the animals were infected and the latter revealed 42.4% of seropositive dogs. Titers in the IFAT ranged from 1:10 to 1:2560, and the most frequent titer was 1:40. The IFAT demonstrated a relatively high sensibility and high specificity, revealing to be a dependable method for epidemiological surveying.
