Architecture and the environment: the idea of adaptability to the environment in modernistic speech

Resumo: Frequently since the mid-20th century, architects and historians of architecture have described Brazilian modern architecture as being adaptable to the environment. In Brazil, the concern with how well architecture fits local conditions began in the 19th and early 20th century, when this concern went as far as becoming of pivotal importance in supporting neocolonial architecture. A member of the neocolonial movement in the 1920s and the main ideologist of the modern movement in Brazil after 1930, Lucio Costa introduced the bases of the modernist ideas on the compatibility of this architecture with the demands of adapting to the environment. The current article discusses the origin and diffusion of the notion of adaptability of architecture to the local conditions in Brazil, as well as how this notion is reflected in the production of national architects.

En Brasil, la preocupación con la adaptación de la arquitectura a las condiciones locales ya aparecía en el siglo 19 y en las primeras décadas del siglo 20, cuando se convierte en un tema esencial de la arquitectura neocolonial. Vinculado al movimiento neocolonial en la década de 1920 e ideólogo principal del movimiento moderno en Brasil, después de 1930, el arquitecto Lucio Costa ha lanzado las bases del discurso modernista sobre la compatibilidad de esta arquitectura con las demandas de adaptación al ambiente. Este texto discute la génesis y la difusión de la noción de adaptabilidad de la arquitectura a las condiciones locales en Brasil, así como la forma como esta noción se refleja en la producción de arquitectos nacionales.De forma recorrente, desde meados do século 20, a arquitetura moderna brasileira tem surgido na voz de historiadores de arquitetura e de arquitetos, como tendo, entre suas qualidades e particularidades fundamentais, sua adaptabilidade ao meio. No Brasil, a preocupação com a adaptação da arquitetura às condições locais já se fazia presente no século 19 e nas primeiras décadas do século 20, quando se torna, inclusive, um dos eixos de fundamentação da arquitetura neocolonial. Vinculado ao movimento neocolonial na década de 1920 e principal ideólogo do movimento moderno no Brasil, após 1930, o arquiteto Lucio Costa lançou as bases do discurso modernista sobre a compatibilidade dessa arquitetura com as demandas de adaptação ao meio. Este texto discute a gênese e a difusão da noção de adaptabilidade da arquitetura às condições locais no Brasil, bem como a forma como essa noção se reflete na produção de arquitetos nacionais.Universidade de São Paulo.
