URBAN CONTINUITY AND PERMEABILITY IN MODERN SKYSCRAPERS OF DOWNTOWN SÃO PAULO

Resumo: This paper discusses the intense relationship between the modern skyscrapers built in downtown São Paulo from the 1930s to the 1960s and their urban space, including their permeability, the ease of access to their interior, and the layout of their architectural program. Their ground floors illustrate the freedom of their design, made possible by separating structural elements from the walls, a basic principle of modern architecture. This freedom ensured new spatial arrangements and a continuity with the building’s surroundings. Taking into account the various factors related to São Paulo urban transformation during the above period, such as opening new avenues and widening existing ones, and the downtown vertical development, one can conclude that the scale of new urban interventions were a determinant in the relationship between buildings and streets, and that these interventions also influenced the emergence of new architectural projects. This research investigates the existing legislation, and the urban and morphological aspects of the architectural projects of a period of great importance in the history of São Paulo.

El diseño de su planta baja enseñó la libertad de diseño que ha sido posibilitada por la separación del sistema estructural de las paredes – principio básico de la arquitectura moderna –, lo que garantizó nuevas disposiciones espaciales y aseguró la relación de continuidad con el lugar donde se encuentra insertado. Teniendo en cuenta los diversos aspectos de transformación urbana de la ciudad en las décadas de 1930 a 1960, incluyendo la apertura y ensanche de nuevas vías y el desarrollo vertical del Centro de la ciudad, se cree que la escala de las nuevas intervenciones urbanas ha determinado el surgimiento de nuevos partidos arquitectónicos. La investigación parte del análisis de la legislación existente, del análisis urbano y morfológico de la zona, y de los proyectos de arquitectura de un período de gran importancia en la historia de la ciudad de São Paulo.O texto trata da relação intensa que se estabeleceu entre os arranhacéus modernos construídos no centro de São Paulo, entre as décadas de 1930 e 1960, e seu espaço urbano, seja a partir da permeabilidade de suas plantas, da facilidade de acesso aos seus interiores, ou da disposição do programa arquitetônico. O desenho de seus térreos apontou a liberdade de projeto possibilitada pela separação do sistema estrutural das vedações – princípio básico da arquitetura moderna –, o que garantiu novos arranjos espaciais e assegurou a relação de continuidade com o lugar onde se inseriu. Considerando os diversos aspectos de transformação urbana da cidade, das décadas de 1930 a 1960, entre eles, a abertura e alargamento de novas vias e a verticalização do centro da cidade, acredita-se que a escala das novas intervenções urbanas determinou o aparecimento de novos partidos arquitetônicos. A pesquisa parte da análise da legislação existente, da análise urbana e morfológica da área e dos projetos arquitetônicos de um período de grande relevância na história da cidade de São Paulo.Universidade de São Paulo.
