History and ritual: possible relations between wars, missions, and devotion

Resumo: The missionary work is discussed through the catechetical theater which is based on a ritual of devotion to St. Benedict (Ilhabela, north coast of São Paulo). Starting from the festivities of Colonial Brazil, we seek to understand the links between missionary activity, the wars of West-Central Africa in the 16th and 17th centuries, and the ritual representations. The focus of this reflection is the relationship between historical events and the ways of publicizing missionary activity. It reflects not only on the ritual as an enhancer of a devotional imagery but also on the unfolding of the represented events, their interpretations, and reframing processes.

Partindo das festas do Brasil Colonial, procuramos compreender os liames entre a atividade missionária, as guerras na África Centro-Ocidental nos séculos XVI e XVII e as representações rituais. O foco desta reflexão são as relações entre os eventos históricos e as formas de publicização da atividade missionária.
