Resumo: This essay aims to reveal the nuances of the posthumous ceremonies performed by the Japanese Buddhist school Honmon Butsuryu-shu (HBS), the first to establish itself in Brazil, in 1908. The referred rite of passage, called “Goeku” consists of performances by priests and adepts (faithful), which encompass a wide spectrum of relationships between humans and non-humans, in addition to a set of symbolic elements composed of sacred objects, gestures, prayers, postures and musical instruments. Therefore, I intend to elucidate such ceremonies based on the interlocutions established together with HBS,  which resulted in the making of field notebooks and in rich oral narratives. In addition to verbality (oral and written), the aim will be to make such ceremonies visible through photographs, since the images stand out for their ability to capture and expose, through a more sensory route, the complex forms of expression present in rituals.

O referido ritual de passagem, denominado “Goeku” (“Culto Póstumo” ou “Culto aos Antepassados”), é constituído por performances realizadas pelos sacerdotes/sacerdotisas e adeptos (fiéis), que abarcam um amplo espectro de relações entre humanos e não-humanos, além de um conjunto de elementos simbólicos composto por objetos sagrados, gestos, orações, posturas e instrumentos musicais. Portanto, pretendo elucidar tais cerimônias a partir das interlocuções estabelecidas junto com a HBS, que resultaram na confecção de cadernos de campo e em ricas narrativas orais. Além da verbalidade (oral e escrita), o intuito será o de dar a ver tais cerimônias por meio de fotografias, pelo fato das imagens destacarem-se pela capacidade de captar e expor, por uma via mais sensorial, as complexas formas de expressão presentes nos rituais.Universidade de São Paulo.
