Within the limits of life and death: a case study on the parents/baby relationship in a neonatal ICU

Resumo: This paper discusses the importance of parents/baby relationship in cases of fetal malformation and hospitalization in neonatal ICU, through the case study of a psychological accompaniment in a public hospital in Porto Alegre, RS. During the follow up, reactions of denial, self-accusation, feelings of guilt and difficulties of the parents to bond to the newborn were observed. Through the psychological care, parents could better understand the reality of their child, were able to get closer to the baby, participate in the basic care, and develop an emotional bond with the child. This study shows the relevance of psychological accompaniment of families with hospitalized babies in the postnatal period.

Durante el acompañamiento, fueron observadas reacciones de negación, auto-acusación, sentimientos de culpa y dificultades de los padres para la vinculación con el recién-nacido. A través de la atención realizada, los padres pudieron comprender mejor la realidad de su hijo, consiguiendo aproximarse del bebé, participar de los cuidados básicos y formar un vínculo afectivo. Se destaca la importancia del acompañamiento psicológico a las familias de bebés en situación de internación hospitalaria en el periodo post-navidad.Este trabalho discute a importância da relação pais/bebê em situações de malformação fetal e internação em UTI Neonatal, através do relato de um acompanhamento psicológico realizado em um hospital público de Porto Alegre, RS. Durante o acompanhamento, foram observadas reações de negação, autoacusação, sentimentos de culpa e dificuldades dos pais para a vinculação com o recém-nascido. Através do atendimento realizado, os pais puderam compreender melhor a realidade de seu filho, conseguindo se aproximar do bebê, participar dos cuidados básicos e formar um vínculo afetivo.
