Resumo: The paper analyses the historical aspects related to the approximation between Communication and Education, considering the emergence of projects in the area and the mobilization of institutions around the subject in the last 60 years. An example was the search of Unesco for the involvement of Latin American states in a matter that seemed secondary to everyone. Then, the paper focuses specifically on the Latin America context, showing how, from the 1960s, something specific and typical occurs, separating the movement towards the media education in Latin American countries from the European and North American efforts to promote Media Literacy. The paper also analyses the role of the I International Congress on Communication and Education (São Paulo, 1998) in making known worldwide a concept that would give new life to the promotion of media education in the continent: the Educommunication.

Num segundo momento, volta-se especificamente para a América Latina, mostrando como, a partir dos anos de 1960, algo específico e típico passa a ocorrer por aqui, distanciando o movimento pela educação midiática dos países do nosso continente dos esforços europeus e norte-americanos em promover a Media Literacy.
