The effects of botulinum toxin in the treatment of spasticity: a review of the literature

Resumo: This paper reviews the literature on the active mechanism and effects of botulinum toxin in decreasing the spasticity in upper and lower limbs, in children with cerebral palsy and adults who suffered stroke. The studies showed the positive effect of the botulinum toxin type A in reducing spasticityand, when associated with physical and occupational therapy interventions, it is possible to observe improvements in functional performance. The effect ofbotulinum toxin type A has limited duration and it is necessary for repeated injections for the effect to be maintained.

The effect ofbotulinum toxin type A has limited duration and it is necessary for repeated injections for the effect to be maintained.O objetivo deste estudo é realizar uma revisão da literatura sobre os mecanismos de ação e efeitos da toxina botulínica na diminuição daespasticidade em membros superiores e inferiores de crianças portadoras de paralisia cerebral e de adultos pósacidente vascular cerebral. Os estudos mostram efeitos positivos da aplicação da toxina botulínica tipo A (TBA) na redução da espasticidade e, quando associado a intervenções de fisioterapiae de terapia ocupacional, pode-se observar também melhora no desempenho funcional dos pacientes. O efeito da aplicação da TBA temduração limitada, necessitando de repetidas aplicações para que o efeito seja mantido.Universidade de São Paulo.
