Reproducibility of electromyography of muscular fatigue during isometric contraction of the quadriceps muscle

Resumo: The purpose of this study was to determine test-retest reliability of electromyography (EMG) during sustained fatiguing contractions of the quadriceps. Ten healthy subjects (five male, five female) were tested on two days, one week apart. Surface EMG was recorded from rectus femoris, vastus lateralis and vastus medialis during sustained isometric contractions at 80% of maximal voluntary contraction held to exhaustion. Quadriceps fatigue was described using three measures for recorded median frequencies (MDF): initial, final, and normalized. Collected initial, final and normalized values showed little variation, indicating similarity between the measures; high reliability (ICC, Intraclass Correlation Coefficient = 0.60-0.85) was found for all three muscle groups at contraction level. The gradual decline in median frequency values clearlyexposes the process of muscle fatigue, related to muscles' physiological changes. The high ICC values found point to reproducibility of measuring muscular fatigue during femoral quadriceps sustained contraction, showing that the proposed methodology is reliable and trustworthy, hence may be used to assess muscular fatigue.

Dez voluntários saudáveis (cinco homens e cinco mulheres) foram selecionados e avaliados em dois dias (teste e reteste)com uma semana de intervalo. Os sinais eletromiográficos do reto femoral, vasto medial e vasto lateral foram registrados durante contração sustentada isométrica a 80% da contração isométrica voluntária máxima mantida até a exaustão (considerada quando do decréscimo em 20% dos valores iniciais). A fadiga no mecanismo extensor do quadríceps foi descrita utilizandose três medidas para a freqüência mediana: inicial, final e valor normalizado. Os dados eletromiográficos iniciais, finais e normalizados mostram pouca variação, indicando similaridade entre as medidas; foi constatada alta confiabilidade para os três músculos avaliados. Torna-se evidente, pelo declínio dos valores da freqüência mediana, o processo de fadiga muscular, relacionado a mudanças fisiológicas do músculo. Os altos valores do índice de correlação intra-classe encontrados no teste e re-teste indicam a reprodutibilidade da medição da fadiga muscular pela contração sustentada do músculo quadríceps femoral, demonstrando que a metodologia proposta é fidedigna e confiável, permitindo que seja utilizada como base para obtenção de indicadores de fadiga muscular.Universidade de São Paulo.
