Pulmonary rehabilitation and quality of life in COPD patients

Resumo: The Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is of the main cause of world morbidity and mortality. It causes physiological and functionalimpairment influencing patient's quality of life. Pulmonary RehabilitationPrograms haven't shown significant modification on physiological parameters usually evaluated on clinical practice. The purpose of this study was to carry out a bibliographic review about the importance of the methods that evaluate the impact of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation on thequality of life in patients with COPD. A literature review of the quality of lifemeasures appraising Pulmonary Rehabilitation programs on COPD was done searching on various data bases. The studies analyzed showed that the benefits on exercise tolerance and quality of life after a Pulmonary Rehabilitation program were not given by physiological parameters changes. What the literature points out is that it is possible to quantify the impact of Pulmonary Rehabilitation on patient's life style what brings moreinformation about those who benefits from this intervention. Beyond the benefits of Pulmonary Rehabilitation programs on the quality of life, one might emphasize the importance of the use of evaluation methods that confirm the effects of such intervention.

Programas de Reabilitação Pulmonar não têm mostrado alterações significativas nos parâmetros fisiológicos freqüentemente avaliados na prática clínica. O objetivo deste foi realizar uma revisãobibliográfica acerca da importância de métodos que avaliam o impacto daReabilitação Pulmonar na qualidade de vida dos pacientes portadores de DPOC. Foi feita uma revisão bibliográfica sobre métodos de avaliação em qualidade de vida e impactos causados pelos programas de ReabilitaçãoPulmonar. Dados foram coletados em diversas bases de dados e sistematizados de forma ilustrativa em uma tabela. Estudos apontam que benefícios obtidos na tolerância ao exercício e na qualidade de vida, apósprogramas de Reabilitação Pulmonar, não são atribuídos à melhora nos parâmetros fisiológicos. Entretanto, quando se avalia a qualidade de vida através de questionários pode-se quantificar os efeitos da Reabilitação Pulmonar, afora estender o campo de informações a respeito do paciente. Além dos benefícios que os programas de Reabilitação promovem naqualidade de vida, podemos enfatizar a importância da utilização de métodos deavaliação que comprovem os efeitos obtidos com uma intervenção.Universidade de São Paulo.
