Travelling Casa da Descoberta: analysis of its trajectory from 1999 to 2019

In the present work, we seek to contribute with reflections on the relevance of the travelling exhibitions of Science Centers and Museums with regard to scientific popularization. We used an exploratory approach based upon the travelling exhibitions carried out between 1999 and 2019 by the Casa da Descoberta – the space for scientific public outreach of the Universidade Federal Fluminense. We present the scope of the travelling activities and impacts on the public, the initial training of mediators, and the difficulties in holding exhibitions. The travelling activities were carried out in all editions of the Brazilian National Science and Technology Week, in public and private educational institutions, in municipalities in the state of Rio de Janeiro and other states with a very diversified public as well as a number of different events (events in beaches, public parks, etc). The analysis of the documents and historical reports of some members of the team showed that the financial resources impacted both the quantity and the scope of the Casa da Descoberta travelling activities and that it is urgent to increase public policies that support Education, museums and their actions to popularize Science. Despite these financial limitations, the quality of actions was maintained due to the commitment and determination of the involved team. In these twenty years of operation, Casa da Descoberta has organized one hundred and eighteen travelling exhibitions and our main achievement was to understand the aspirations of the public that participates in these actions, attempting to create affective bonds and break, or at least reduce, the communication and attitude barriers that exist between museums, science and people.
