Resumo: The public engagement model intents to engage citizens in several aspects of science and its relationship with the practice of citizen science, which comprehends voluntary participation in scientific research, is a subject of debate in the realm of science communication. In order to understand better this theme, this work analyzed two federal programs in Serra dos Órgãos National Park that incorporated volunteers in activities such as participatory monitoring and citizen science, and their guidelines, which were aligned with the concepts of public engagement in science. This is a qualitative research with semi-structured interviews with six coordinators and six volunteers from the two programs, and it was applied the method of hermeneutic-dialogic analysis described by Minayo (1992). The research showed the main challenges of including planned actions of public engagement in the practice of the activities, although it indicated the potential of this relationship due to the influence that the programs had on the political and socio-environmental behavior of the interviewed volunteers. Thus, it is expected that the involvement of professionals of science communication in related programs can support the effective progress in the relationship between science and society.
