The field of engineering and social development in Brazil

Generally speaking, everyday engineering practices are profoundly associated with the development of the hegemonic capitalist socio-technical order. Taking such activity as a way of also producing social development (or change) – that is, the very subversion of this order – is something somewhat recent in the world. In Brazil, the exchange of experiences and the deepening of the reflection concerning this subject is greatly associated with the Engineering and Social Development National Meeting (ENEDS, in Portuguese). Because of that, a research on the 392 papers presented in the so far twelve editions of the meeting has been started with the aim of, initially, describing the field of engineering and social development in the country. In this manuscript, we present the first results of such work, providing some initial hypothesis to them. At the end, we describe the next intended steps in this endeavour and what is aimed with them.
