Resumo: OBJECTIVE: Identify the main properties of the available polydioxanone (PDO) threads, their indications, limitations, and complications reported in the literature.METHODS: For the systematic review, the databases PubMed and the Virtual Health Library (BVS) were used. Articles published in English from 2017 to 2022 were selected, using "Polydioxanone" and "Thread" as search keywords. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 24 articles were selected for the study.RESULTS: It was found that facial lifting with absorbable PDO threads is a minimally invasive procedure characterized by low complication rates. Among the advantageous properties of PDO, its biodegradability and biocompatibility stand out, along with a relatively slow degradation process. Other positive characteristics observed include the short surgical time, the temporary effect of the procedure, and the possibility of performing it under local anesthesia.CONCLUSIONS: The PDO thread, biocompatible and collagen-stimulating, provides good tensile strength, making it promising for orofacial harmonization. It is suitable for patients with mild to moderate ptosis or facial paralysis seeking symmetry, but not for those expecting permanent results or who have unrealistic expectations. Possible complications include edema, bruising, ecchymosis, rippling, and asymmetries, which, although not severe, should be disclosed before the procedure.
