Resumo: OBJECTIVE: Summarize the evidence from the last two decades on the effect of exercise on the outcome of different viral infections.METHODS: Scientific articles were searched in PubMed, Academic Google, SciELO, LILACS and Web of Science databases, published between 2001 and 2020, which related physical activity with viral infections. After analyzing the title, abstract and full text, our group selected only those that met the research objective, excluding researches with animals, other review articles or papers published in languages other than Portuguese, English and Spanish. After the final selection of materials, the texts were analyzed to write this review.RESULTS: After searching and applying the exclusion criteria, 49 articles were selected. Most of them focused on the themes of human immunodeficiency virus and human herpesvirus types 4 and 5. To a lesser extent, research was found on the relationship between physical activity and hepatitis B and C viruses, human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 and some viruses that cause respiratory tract infections.CONCLUSIONS: Intense physical exercise can be harmful (or even unfeasible) for those infected with human Herpesvirus types 4 and 5, Influenza virus, patients with chronic hepatitis B and/or C in advanced stages of liver disease or those with tropical spastic paraparesis caused by HTLV-1. In general, regular and non-exhausting physical activity is beneficial to prevent illness and the development of serious or fatal clinical conditions.
