Resumo: OBJECTIVE: Compare the functional fitness between middle-aged women and elderly entering into a physical activities program at health facilities.METHODS: The study included 64 women divided into two groups, one called Middle-Aged Group (G1: 46,89,0 years) and Senior Group (G2: 66,34,3 years). The components of functional fitness were verified by tests from American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), then statistically analyzed and, by standardization norms proposed in literature.RESULTS: The results demonstrated significant differences in the three functional fitness parameters, aerobic endurance (G1: 525.3±64,3sec; G2: 577.4±91,1sec; p<0,01*), agility (G1: 28,1sec±5,4sec; G2: 31.6±6,1sec; p<0,01*) and coordination (G1: 16,8sec±8,4sec; G2: 21,5sec±10,7sec; p<0,01*), which showed up to be better in the middle-aged group. However, when compared by normative values presented in the literature, both groups showed a development considered as weak.CONCLUSIONS: The data of this study reveal that damage about functional fitness may occur earlier, mainly due to insufficient physical activity, which might accelerate the aging process. The results indicate that both groups are insufficiently physically active.
