Resumo: OBJECTIVE: To compare the presence of cardiovascular risk factors and quality of life in the active and sedentary elderly.METHODS: This is a prospective, cross-sectional and observational study carried out at a basic health unit in the city of Uchoa - SP. The sample consisted of 40 elderly people of both sexes, divided into two groups, 20 elderly in the active group and 20 in the sedentary group. Age, sex, body mass index and waist circumference were collected. To analyze the quality of life of the elderly, the Short Form 36 questionnaire (SF-36) will be applied. The cardiovascular risk factors investigated were total obesity and central obesity. Descriptive statistics were performed and data were presented in means and standard deviations, and inferential statistics with Shapiro-Wilk test to analyze data normality and unpaired t-test to compare risk factors between groups.RESULTS: There was a higher prevalence of females in both active and sedentary groups, 55% and 75%, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference for age (p=0.15), weight (p=0.15) and height (p=0.33) between groups. The sedentary group had a statistically greater body mass index (p=0.02) than the active group (23.06±8.64 kg/m2 versus 27.73±8.11 kg/m2, respectively). Abdominal circumference values were also statistically higher (p≤0.05) in the sedentary group (96.65±13.38 cm) compared to the active group (88.25±13.22 cm). There were no significant differences (p≥0.05) in the domains of quality of life between groups.CONCLUSIONS: The sedentary elderly presented cardiovascular risk factors total obesity and central obesity and there was no difference in quality of life between the groups.
