Impact of urinary incontinence on the quality of life of menopausal women

OBJECTIVE: To investigate in the scientific literature the impacts of urinary incontinence (UI) on the social, emotional, psychological, physical, and sexual scope of menopausal women.METHODS: This is an integrative literature review, selected from the following databases: PUBMED, SCOPUS and WEB OF SCIENCE. Inclusion criteria were articles published in the last five years (2017-2021), available in full for free, studies that address the proposed topic in English and Portuguese. Exclusion criteria were review studies, editorials, dissertations, theses, monographs, and studies in abstract form only.RESULTS: At the end of the search, eight articles were selected, characterized as to the sample, quality of life (QoL) instrument used, and results found. It was observed that most of the research involved qualitative questionnaires, with relevant reliability, which elucidates the importance of the research data. It was found that QoL domains such as physical, psychological/emotional, social, and sexual limitations were associated with a negative outcome in menopausal women.CONCLUSIONS: There is a need for new approaches aimed at further investigating all aspects that cause negative impacts on the lives of women in menopause.
