Resumo: In this text, I present some reflections about “language”. After all, what is language? Why should people take language more seriously? How does language relate to culture, politics, history, the body, and identities? How does language relate to the world? What is the role of language in our lives? My conclusion is that language is a “double-edged sword”: it has the power to include and exclude, to accept and resist, to oppress and liberate. In other words, language does not only communicate or describe everyday situations: it acts in the social order.

Por que as pessoas deveriam levar a língua mais a sério? Como a língua se relaciona com a cultura, a política, a história, o corpo e as identidades? Como a língua se relaciona com o mundo? Qual o papel da língua em nossas vidas? A minha conclusão é que a língua é uma “faca de dois gumes”: ela tem o poder de incluir e excluir, de aceitar e resistir, de oprimir e libertar. Em outras palavras, a língua não apenas comunica e descreve situações cotidianas: ela produz ações em âmbito social.
