THE PLACE OF THE FOREIGNER IN A DISTANT SHORE: A READING PROPOSAL

Resumo: Endorsing Silva´s contention that the production of identity and difference is a social and educational problem (2000), this analysis proposes the study of literature as a forum for  a debate on a philosophy of difference that really celebrates the multiple and the novel. Taking Caryl Phillips´s  novel A Distant Shore as a provocation for this discussion, this study initially describes the relational and classificatory mechanisms involved in the attribution of identity and of the outsider status, and proceeds to propose a critical reading of the novel that in effect may take in consideration mechanisms that produce difference, and interrogate them.

Endossando a posição de Silva (2000), que considera a produção da identidade e da diferença como um problema social e pedagógico, esta análise propõe o estudo da literatura como fórum privilegiado para o debate em torno de uma filosofia da diferença que realmente celebre o múltiplo, e toma o romance Uma margem distante, de Caryl Phillips como provocação para essa discussão. Após, inicialmente, descrever os mecanismos relacionais, classificatórios e simbólicos envolvidos na atribuição da identidade e da atribuição do  status do forasteiro, passa à proposição de uma leitura que efetivamente reconheça e questione os mecanismos de produção da diferença.
