Resumo: Our essay studies the powerlessness and the loneliness in the novel Vidas secas (Droughty lives), by Graciliano Ramos, in the painting “La Paye des Moissonneurs” (“Paying the reapers”), by Léon-Augustin Lhermitte, and in the painting “Festa de São João” (“Feast of St. John”), by Cândido Portinari. We don’t necessarily aim to search the causes of that powerlessness and loneliness, but as they occur and are formally worked in the three works mentioned.
