Resumo:  In search for restoring Rio Grande do Sul’s Modernist Movement, this article presents a study on Ernani Fornari’s poem "O Trem da Serra", focusing on its historical and social aspects. Ernani Fornari was an influent personality in the Modernism in Rio Grande do Sul. Through "Trem da Serra" - a colonial poem from the Italian region – he expressed some of the most decisive aspects of Modernist doctrine, incorporating local language, dialoguing with other arts, accepting the speed of changes and presenting a unique view over the landscape and history that are part of Rio Grande do Sul’s mountain range.

Apresenta-se aqui um estudo sobre O Trem da Serra de Ernani Fornari, focalizado nos aspectos Sócio-Históricos da Obra. Ernani Fornari foi um grande expoente do Movimento Modernista gaúcho e conseguiu com o Trem da Serra – O poema Colonial da região italiana- reunir as mais decisivas variáveis da doutrina modernista — incorporar a linguagem da vida diária, dialogar com as outras artes, aceitar a velocidade das transformações — com uma atenção rara, rarísssima para a paisagem, a história e a sensibilidade próprias de uma parte importante do Rio Grande do Sul, a Serra.
