Relations between quality of life and type 1 diabetes mellitus on teenagers

Resumo: The impact of diabetes in the quality of life of teenagers starts at the diagnosis and goes until the maintenance of the treatment. It may interfere in social relationships and growth. This study investigated the quality of life of teenagers with type 1 diabetes mellitus, also observing symptoms such as anxiety, depression and stress, and their association with treatment adherence, self-care and sociodemographic variables. The study consisted of 122 teenagers diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, aged 12 to 18 years (M= 14.71; ±1.77), in which 56.6% were male, who responded to self-report tools. Four variables together explained 55.9% of the variance in the quality of life of adolescents: symptoms of anxiety, depression and stress; adherence to treatment; hospitalizations; and self care. The findings of this study highlight the impact of psychological symptoms and the importance of treatment adherence and self-care in the quality of life of teenagers with type 1 diabetes mellitus.Keywords: diabetes mellitus type 1, teenagers, quality of life.

Este estudo investigou a qualidade de vida em adolescentes com diabetes mellitus tipo 1, observando também sintomas como ansiedade, depressão e estresse, e sua associação com a adesão ao tratamento, autocuidado e variáveis sociodemográficas. Participaram 122 adolescentes com diagnóstico de diabetes mellitus tipo 1, com idades entre 12 e 18 anos (M=14,71; ±1,77), sendo 56,6% do sexo masculino, que responderam instrumentos de autorrelato. Quatro variáveis conjuntamente explicaram 55,9% da variância da qualidade de vida desses adolescentes: sintomas de ansiedade, depressão e estresse; adesão ao tratamento; número de internações; e autocuidado.
