Resumo: In the mechanical industry there is a constant need to join metal sheets. There are several ways to mechanically join these blanks: some can be disassembled such as those made by screws, nuts and pins; and some permanent ones such as those made by welding, adhesive bonding and rivet. In addition, a method that has been growing in the industry, mainly in the automobile industry, is the joining by clinching. This method consists of joining blanks by an local plastic deformation through the action of a punch that deforms an overlapping joint against a die causing the interlocking between the sheets. In this work the clinching joining method was studied by practical and computational experiments using the finite element method. The influence of two tool geometries over low carbon steel and aluminum alloy joints was evaluated. The results were compared and it was observed that the computer simulation is a viable tool to define the punch and die geometry and the process parameters as well. The results were close to those obtained in the practical experiments.
