This paper provides a simplified methodology to support horizontal alignment planning for highways. The approach adopted considers the influence of technical, socioeconomic and environmental factors during the planning stage. The proposed set of analysis criteria includes the terrain slope, soil type, land cover, central business districts and development zones located within the study area. Using a Geographic Information System and weights resulted from a multicriteria analysis, a decision model was created to allow the automatic design of the horizontal alignment between predetermined origin and destination points. Finally, it is conducted a case study that reveals the consistency of the proposed methodology, generating a horizontal alignment that meets with the expected results.
