Resumo: Petroleum is an important raw material. The first step in the construction of the oil well is drilling, in which drilling fluid is used to support the well wall, to cool the drill bit, among other functions. In its formulation, additives such as polymers are used, which serve to guarantee its properties. This work aims to synthesize a new water-soluble polymer for possible application in drilling fluids. The tetrapolymer synthesis was carried out in an inert atmosphere and used the monomers acrylamide (AM), 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS), dimethyldiallylammonium chloride (DMDAAC) and acrylic acid (AAC). Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry (FTIR) and thermogravimetric (TGA) analyzes were performed to characterize the product obtained. The synthetized tetrapolymer was stable up to a temperature of 230ºC, a result obtained by TGA, which suggests that it is able to keep its structure stable at high temperatures, and can be used in onshore or offshore oil fields.
