Education for democratic citizenship: Challenges, impasses and perspectives

Resumo: This article discuss the contemporary intersections between citizenship and democracy, especially regarding the role of education. The theoretical and conceptual debate about the challenges and impasses of citizenship and democracy in contemporary times is rescued, as well as the characteristics of a specific model of citizenship, called democratic citizenship. This model is based on three basis that should integrate the school curriculum: (a) critical thinking; (b) universal citizenship; and c) imaginative capacity. We understand that construction of democratic citizenship depends on a plural human formation that surpasses technical and economic utilitarianism. The importance of the presence of the humanities, philosophy and arts in the school curriculum arises from this need, due to critical and denaturalizing nature of these areas of knowledge.

Se presenta el debate teórico y conceptual sobre los desafíos y los impasses de la ciudadanía y de la democracia en la contemporaneidad, así como se enfatiza las características de un modelo específico de ciudadanía, más activa y sustantiva, que es la ciudadanía democrática. Este modelo se fundamenta en tres bases que deben integrar el curriculum escolar: (a) el pensamiento crítico; (b) la ciudadanía universal; y (c) la capacidad imaginativa. Se entiende que la construcción de la ciudadanía democrática depende de una formación humana plural, para superar el utilitarismo técnico y económico. De ahí surge la importancia de la presencia de las ciencias humanas, de la filosofía y de las artes en el currículo escolar, dado el carácter crítico y desnaturalizador de esas áreas del conocimiento.O presente artigo tem como objetivo discutir as intersecções contemporâneas entre a cidadania e a democracia, sobretudo no que concerne ao papel da educação para a consolidação de ambas. Resgata-se o debate teórico e conceitual sobre os desafios e os impasses da cidadania e da democracia na contemporaneidade, bem como enfatiza-se as características de um modelo específico de cidadania, mais ativa e substantiva, que é a cidadania democrática. Tal modelo fundamenta-se em três pilares que devem integrar o currículo escolar: a) o pensamento crítico, b) a cidadania universal, c) a capacidade imaginativa. Entende-se que a construção da cidadania democrática depende de uma formação humana plural, de modo a superar o utilitarismo técnico e econômico.
