MUSIC PROMOTION IN BRAZIL: from the ‘caitituagem’ to the challenges of digital competition

Summary: This article discusses radio as a mediator and curator of musical consumption, a historically-defined role that is currently questioned given the introduction of digital tools of music distribution. By means of interviews with professionals from the recording and radio industries, describe the mechanisms used by the record labels’ promotion staff to have a song played in the radio outputs. Practitioners and stations used such commercial relationships to create legitimation strategies that, even with the rapid growth of subscription-based music streaming services, support the curatorial mission. The radiophonic language, centred at the presenter, is complementary of the role undertaken by the software that organise and distribute musical content.

Por meio de entrevistas com profissionais das indústrias radiofônica e fonográfica, são discutidos os mecanismos que divulgadores de gravadoras utilizavam para emplacar uma canção na programação do rádio. Locutores e emissoras se aproveitaram dessas relações comerciais para criar estratégias de legitimidade que, mesmo com o crescimento do acesso a serviços de música por assinatura, sustentam a função de curadoria.
