Resumo: Introduction: Humanization is understood as the protagonism and autonomy of the subjects involved in the production of health - users, workers and managers, with their valorization and the establishment of solidary bonds through collective participation. Objective: The objective of this study was to characterize the role of nurses in humanization in intensive care units and to identify the challenges and difficulties encountered in their implementation. Material and Methods: This is an integrative review, with an online survey that took place in October 2018 on the Virtual Health Library portal, in the Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences Databases and in Nursing, using the descriptors: Humanization AND Nursing AND Intensive Care Unit. Twelve articles were selected and a descriptive analysis was performed with the creation of the categories: Nurse's role in humanization in Intensive Care Units and Challenges and difficulties encountered by nurses when implementing humanization in Intensive Care Units. Results: The analyzed articles point out that nurses play a primary role in humanized care, who must assist the patient in a holistic, comprehensive and empathetic way, considering their family members in the care process, with communication as one of the instruments. In terms of challenges and difficulties, the amount of technological apparatus, the depersonalization of nurses, their work overload, low pay and lack of autonomy are mentioned. Conclusion: Given this, it is clear that the use of strategies by nurses to effect humanization, despite all existing obstacles, is essential for the patient to have comprehensive care, including the role of the family in their process recovery.
