This paper discusses utilitarian information services, their genesis, categories and importance. It approaches information and informational services, among them, the Reference Service, in the words of authors of the area, for conceptualization and reflective study. Moreover, inclusion is necessary in a country where social inequality reigns, and it is perceived that the utilitarian information service becomes a useful instrument to this issue. The general objective is to characterize the utilitarian information and its conceptual theoretical aspects and its approach in IC scientific publications indexed in BRAPCI. The specific objectives are: to identify which journals have published on the theme; to verify the scientific methodology used by the authors of the researched articles and to present the contributions of the exposed works to Information Science, as well as to society. It uses as methodology the exploratory research with bibliographical survey, of qualitative and quantitative approach, resulting in the collection of 16 (sixteen) articles, in which it was carried through the critical analysis of the rescued works to obtain answers to the objectives, having as resource the BRAPCI. It is concluded that the theme is little explored, which needs work and implementation of utilitarian information services in public libraries in Brazil.
