As crianças não leitoras, no primeiro ano do ensino fundamental de uma escola pública municipal do Brasil, foram os sujeitos da investigação. Com o estímulo da leitura, esses estudantes se tornaram leitores de uma palavra. O tipo de informação oferecida, simples ou complexa, e a quantidade de perceptos, envolvidos em uma postura e em outra, foram determinantes na obtenção desses resultados, bem como a anterioridade da recepção (leitura) sobre a produção (escrita). Entre os achados mais relevantes, está o conceito de leitor de uma palavra, descrito na fórmula "bolo"=/"bolu/. A criança entende a leitura por meio do "saber como" e deixa de ser um analfabeto completo. Essa postura implica rever os conceitos tradicionais da literatura, nos quais a leitura lexical ocorreria no final do processo de aprendizagem. Esta pesquisa mostra que isso pode ocorrer também no começo. Acredita-se que essa habilidade do aprendiz signifique a descoberta do enigma da leitura, relacionando oralidade e escrita. Outro achado revela a saliência da via lexical no início da aprendizagem e a mudança de saliência entre as vias lexicais e sublexicais em diferentes etapas da aprendizagem. Com esses resultados, presume-se que a leitura fluente possa ser obtida em menos tempo e de forma mais eficiente a partir de estímulos adequados. As limitações da pesquisa não permitiram conclusões sobre o efeito da leitura de uma palavra na apropriação de outras habilidades, mais complexas, exigidas na formação de um leitor fluente, o que sugere investigações longitudinais para responder essas questões, bem como para descobrir novos estímulos de aprendizagem.This thesis discusses the concept of single-word reader and early reading through a theoretical reflection on two empirical stimuli: the alphabet (isolated characters) and the reading (written words). Not reader children, in the first year of elementary education at a public school of Brazil, were the subjects of the research. With the stimulus of reading, these students become readers of a word. The type of information offered, simple or complex, and the amount of percepts involved in one posture and in another were determinants of these results, as well as the advance of reception (reading) on production (writing). Among the most important findings is the concept of reader of one word described in formula "bolo" (cake) = /"bolu/. The child understands reading through the "know how"; and ceases to be a complete illiterate. This position entails reviewing the traditional concepts of literature, in which the lexical reading occurred at the end of the learning process. It can also occur at the beginning. It is believed that this ability of the learner means the discovery of the puzzle of reading, linking oral and written. Another finding shows the salience of the lexical track in early learning and alternation of salience between the lexical and sublexical tracks at different stages of learning. With these results, it is assumed that fluent reading can be obtained in less time and more efficiently with adequate stimuli.
