Summary: John Dewey's conception of democracy is examined in relation to his perspective of society and school in Democracy and education. It is postulated that the author answered to human problems due to industrialization, urbanization, immigration, scientific and technological progress that highlighted bourgeois society, mainly The United States of America, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. According to Dewey, the school played an important role in training and inspired the development of intellectual attitudes of initiative, thinking skill, free spirit and social responsibility. Finally, for the author, such attitudes would favor greater exchange and communication that have cooperated to improve democracy.

Para Dewey, la escuela cumplió un papel importante en la capacitación, influyendo en el desarrollo de actitudes intelectuales de iniciativa, capacidad de reflexión, espíritu libre y responsabilidad social. Finalmente, para el autor, tales actitudes favorecerían un mayor intercambio y comunicación, contribuyendo a la promoción de la democracia.Examina-se a concepção de democracia de John Dewey em relação à sua perspectiva de sociedade e escola em Democracia e educação. Postula-se que o autor respondia aos problemas humanos decorrentes da industrialização, urbanização, imigração, do progresso científico e tecnológico que marcaram a sociedade burguesa, em especial os Estados Unidos da América, nas décadas finais do século XIX e iniciais do século XX. Para Dewey, a escola cumpria papel importante na formação e influia no desenvolvimento de atitudes intelectuais de iniciativa, capacidade de reflexão, espírito livre e responsabilidade social.
