Frequency of endoparasites eggs in curly lettuce (Lactuca sativa) sold in markets, open markets and restaurants in Manaus – Amazonas

Resumo: | Intestinal parasites represent a serious public health problem in Brazil, and among parasitic diseases, enteroparasitosis are the most common. The eating habit of consuming fresh vegetables allows the exposure of a large portion of the population to transmissible forms of parasites. Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) is the vegetable with the greatest production (ease of cultivation) and consumption (ease of access) in Brazil, as it is part of the Brazilian daily diet. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop an epidemio-parasitological survey of parasitic forms in curly lettuce (Lactuca sativa) commercialized in markets, open markets and restaurants in Manaus, AM, Brazil. Curly lettuce samples were collected from markets, open markets and restaurants and evaluated for the detection of parasites. In samples from markets and open markets, 100% of the presence of parasite eggs was observed, highlighting the genera Hymenolepis spp. and Entamoeba spp., in addition to a lower frequency of Ascaris spp., Taenia spp., Schistosoma spp. and Toxocara spp. Regarding to the results of restaurant samples, in 50% of them we were able to detect parasite eggs, highlighting the genera Hymenolepis spp., Ascaris spp. and Ancylostoma spp. Thus, based on our results, we can conclude that the curly lettuce sold in markets or open markets in Manaus, during the period of this study, presented 100% contamination by parasite eggs, whereas in 50% of curly lettuce samples in restaurants, theoretically ready for consumption, parasite eggs were also identified. |

El hábito alimenticio de consumir verduras frescas permite la exposición de la población a formas transmisibles de parásitos. La lechuga (Lactuca sativa) es la hortaliza de mayor producción (facilidad de cultivo) y consumo en el país, ya que forma parte de la dieta brasileña. Así, el objetivo de este estudio fue desarrollar una investigación epidemiológica-parasitológica a través de la investigación de formas parasitarias en lechuga rizada (Lactuca sativa) comercializado en mercados, ferias abiertas y restaurantes en Manaus, AM, Brasil. Se recolectaron muestras de lechuga rizada de mercados, ferias y restaurantes y se procesaron para la detección de parásitos. En muestras de mercados y mercados abiertos se observó el 100% de la presencia de huevos de parásitos, destacando los géneros Hymenolepis spp. y Entamoeba spp., además de una frecuencia más baja de Ascaris spp., Taenia spp., Schistosoma spp. y Toxocara spp. En cuanto al resultado de las muestras recolectadas en restaurantes, en el 50% de ellas fue posible detectar huevos de parásitos, destacando los géneros Hymenolepis spp., Ascaris spp. y Ancylostoma spp. Así, con base en nuestros resultados, podemos concluir que la lechuga crujiente vendida en mercados o ferias en Manaus, durante el período de este estudio, tuvo un 100% de contaminación por huevos de parásitos, mientras que en 50% de las muestras de lechuga en restaurantes, teóricamente listas para el consumo, también identificaron huevos de parásitos.As parasitoses intestinais representam um sério problema de saúde pública no Brasil, sendo que, entre as doenças parasitárias, as enteroparasitoses são as mais comuns. O hábito alimentar de consumir hortaliças in natura possibilita a exposição de uma grande parcela da população às formas transmissíveis de parasitos. A alface (Lactuca sativa) é a hortaliça de maior produção (facilidade de cultivo) e consumo (facilidade de acesso) no país, pois faz parte do hábito alimentar do brasileiro. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi desenvolver uma pesquisa epidemio-parasitológico através da pesquisa de formas parasitárias em alface crespa (Lactuca sativa) comercializada em mercados, feiras livres e em restaurantes de Manaus, AM, Brasil. Amostras de alface crespa foram coletadas de mercados, feiras e restaurantes e processadas para a detecção de parasitos.
