Resumo: The aim of the present study was to investigate the thinking of the English author Roger Williams, founder of the North American State of Rhode Island, who was formed under a policy of separation between the Church and the State, which represented an innovation in the beginning of the 17th century. In order to understand his theory, it was analyzed his work “The bloudy tenent of persecution, for cause of conscience”, published in 1644 in England. We sought to identify whether the Williams's theory could contribute to the discussions regarding the topic of religious freedom in contemporaneity, since he was a pioneer in the inclusion of the religious freedom in the positive right, and in the establishment of a secular government on North American soil. He played an expressive role in the cultural transformation process, by representing the thought that would be established in the United States of America about the fundamental rights of the individual, especially about freedom and equality, resulting in the idea of religious freedom. The values and principles advocated by him reflected directly in the foundations of the nation and they were subsequently expressed in the Declaration of Independence (1776), in the American Constitution (1787) and in the Declaration of Rights, of the North American nation (1791). Roger Williams was an important character in American colonial history and recognized as the main reformer in America, remembered at the Reformation Wall in Geneva, witzerland.

Fundo Mackenzie
