In recent years, more attention has been given to basic sanitation problems in Brazil and worldwide, especially for the reason that, the lack of this, causes a significant increase in diseases, especially those related to direct contact with open sewers and contamination of water resources. In order to reduce these problems, engineering professionals should plan and design new sewage collection systems, also thinking about how to keep it running as long as possible without the need for corrective maintenance, as the costs of these services are most often higher burdensome to public coffers than new works, not to mention the inconvenience they cause to users. Therefore, the way to plan, design, execute and specify materials to be used are of great importance for the best cost benefit of the work. Under this view, this work evaluated the costs with corrective and preventive maintenance of sewage networks through a case study and with data obtained in the literature. The idea of this study is to identify the execution and material problems so as not to repeat them, as they are mostly underground works and pavements for public roads, thus making future inspections and maintenance very difficult. As a result, it was realized that an intensive inspection in the field on new network projects, in the specifications and controls of materials and equipment to be used, in the use of the systems by the users guiding them and inspecting the properties, could reduce considerably the volume of future maintenance. In this way, a contract for the maintenance and extension of sewage collection networks could be used mostly in works to expand the system, bringing more benefits to the local population and new collections for the responsible company to revert in new projects.
