Relação entre asma e sobrepeso/obesidade e associação com fatores determinantes nos primeiros mil dias de vida em crianças de 6-7 anos de idade do município de Palhoça-Santa Catarina

Introduction: In recent years there has been an increase in the prevalence of asthma and overweight/obesity in children. The possible relationship between these diseases has been questioned, but a consensus has not yet been reached. What has been shown is that overweight predates the symptoms of asthma and that the first 1000 days of life have an important role in prevention and also in the appearance of certain diseases in the future. Objective: To know the relationship between asthma and overweight/obesity and association with determining factors in the first 1000 days of life in children 6-7 years of age in the municipality of Palhoça-Santa Catarina. Methods: Cross-sectional epidemiological study nested with a retrospective cohort performed with children aged 6-7 years. Questionnaires were applied on asthma symptoms, food pattern in the first two years of life, sociodemographic and economic variables, gestational factors and anthropometric data collected from children. The data were analyzed in the SPSS program, where normality test, parametric and non-parametric tests were applied, when indicated. A logistic regression analysis was performed to observe the independence of the associations. Values of p <0.05 were considered significant. The project was submitted and approved by UNISUL’S CEP (university ethics committee). Results: 201 children were evaluated, 25.4% were asthmatic and 30.8% were overweight/obese. Within the asthmatic children group, 37.2% have obesity. Information such as waist size, tricipital skin roll and BMI were higher in the asthmatic group with overweight/obesity compared to controls (p <0.05). The factors found closely associated to asthma and overweight/obesity included maternal asthma history (OR: 3.73; CI: 1.10 – 12.6) and pregnancy high blood pressure (OR: 3.29; CI: 1.08 – 9.94). Conclusion: The results showed a high prevalence of asthma, as well as being overweight/obese. Nutritional profile indicators of overweight/obesity were higher in infants with asthma, while factors from the first 1000 days of the participants such as maternal asthma history and high blood pressure during pregnancy contribute for the association to asthma and overweight/obesity in children from 6 to 7 years old.
