Instituições de educação superior como agentes de inovação para o desenvolvimento sustentável: estudo em uma universidade comunitária de Santa Catarina

The growing societal demands for higher education institutions’ (HEIs) actions towards sustainable development make these institutions drivers of change. HEIs around the world are increasingly aware of their role in developing and implementing a sustainable paradigm with the potential to accelerate progress towards sustainable development. This study aims to understand how education for sustainable development in a community university in Santa Catarina can develop innovations for sustainable development. Accordingly, this study presents a review of the international scientific literature, which enabled the development of categories for analysis, also allowing the identification of indicators, concepts, barriers and facilitators for sustainable development in HEIs. In order to deepen the studies, 15 collaborators (professors and managers) of a community university in Santa Catarina were interviewed and these interviews were analyzed through content analysis, as indicated by Bardin. After the analyzes, it was possible to understand that innovations for sustainable development occur transversally in universities, at all levels and sectors. These innovations for sustainable development in HEIs, and particularly focusing on community universities and the analyzed institution, occur through innovative management practices for each institution, transforming behavior and broadening people's knowledge of new ways of conducting their daily activities, and through the adoption of new technologies for sustainability; through teaching practices, with innovative approaches, new methodologies, practices, integration with research and extension, training of professors, students and the community; through research, through the development of new knowledge, new technologies, and new methods; through outreach, through the transfer of technologies and knowledge to the communities, promoting their development, either through technologies, knowledge and processes, which may be new to the society or new to the community where they are being implemented; through campuses, through the adoption of new technologies, new processes, new methods, new environments that inspire awareness, creativity, innovation, learning and development of students, community and teachers, as well as reducing the ecological footprint of universities and inspiring society to follow the same path.
