Resumo: The objective of this study was to analyze the bone thickness and depth and the cortical thickness and depth of the buccal shelf region, in order to determine which is the most suitable place for insertion of orthodontic mini-implants. For this, 42 conical beam computed tomography (CBCT) of adult patients with an average age of 31 years were selected, 19 male patients and 23 female patients. The CT scans were processed with the OsiriX Medical Imaging software and standardized cuts to check the quantity and bone quality of the region were obtained. The results showed a greater amount of bone and cortex available as it advances posteriorly in the mandible. In the vertical direction, the bone and cortical thickness are greater at 15mm than at 10mm from the tip of the cusp. In the horizontal direction, the bone thickness is greater at 4mm from the tip of the cusp than at 6mm, but the pattern is reversed when the cortex is analyzed individually. It was concluded that the best place for the insertion of the devices is the region of the distal root of the second molar 15mm vertically from the tip of the cusp and perpendicular to the occlusal plane.

Para isso, foram selecionadas 42 tomografias computadorizadas de feixe cônico (TCFC), de pacientes adultos com idade media de 31 anos, sendo 19 pacientes do sexo masculino e 23 pacientes do sexo feminino. As tomografias foram processadas com o software OsiriX Medical Imaging e cortes padronizados para a verificação da quantidade e qualidade óssea da região foram obtidos. Os resultados apresentaram maior quantidade de osso e cortical disponíveis à medida em que se avança posteriormente na mandíbula. No sentido vertical, as espessuras óssea e cortical são maiores em 15mm do que em 10mm da ponta de cúspide. No sentido horizontal transversal, a espessura óssea é maior a 4mm da ponta de cúspide do que a 6mm, mas o padrão se inverte quando a cortical é analisada individualmente.
