Resumo: One of the permanent challenges of this century is undoubtedly to break the conflicts between development and environment preservation or at least settle the demands of both and address the construction impacts on the environment. The concern with the impacts caused to the environment and the use of natural and non-renewable resources reached greater proportions in the 90’s. Several countries showed fully committed to the ideal of developing methodologies for the environmental performance of buildings since the construction sector consumes a big amount of natural resources and is responsible for generating significant environment impacts during the process and the activities related to the entire construction chain, operation and demolition services. The objective of this research is to assess the minimal requirements to obtain the five most usual environmental certifications in civil engineering – LEED, AQUA-HQE, EDGE, PROCEL Edifica and SELO AZUL CAIXA – and the degree of rigor for the qualification and what the consequences of obtaining each certification seeking to identify the extent of adequacy for the construction industry. For this, was developed a comparative analysis between the required indicators and parameters of the certification systems and the environmental assessment. The methodology resulted in a proposal of a common organization system that was able reconcile the structure of certification and evaluation systems. From the compatibility of the structure of the evaluation systems of each environmental certification to meet a single parameter of benchmarking, in general terms, it remained possible the comparative analysis, identification of the common subcategories from the analyzed systems and which one of them meet the requirements of environment adequacy conditions.
