The growing demand to store information in digital media, plus the fact that is more and more important to know how to use them and how to store them in an intelligent and efficient way, shows up as a big contemporary problem to business and corporations: the fact that most of the informatic systems or softwares available on the market are not able to work like this. This paper aims to demonstrate the use of ontologies and inference mechanisms as an alternative to expanding access to knowledge from implicit information that are stored. This study used the tool Protégé together with the inference engine Pellet to manipulate and shows the data presented in the validation of the proposal which is intended to infer information from a practical example and easy to understand. As background to the study, this paper also discusses about concepts related to information, knowledge, ontology and inference of information. On this way the results are described and evaluated what permit to conclude that it is possible with the use of ontologies infer information implicit in a set of structured data from the application of reasoning that uses rules, relationships between classes and instances represented in ontology
