O efeito do óleo essencial da alpinia zerumbet na espasticidade: uma revisão integrativa de literatura

INTRODUCTION: Spasticity is a motor disorder characterized after an injury to the upper motor neuron, which results in intermittent or sustained involuntary muscle activation that may be of cerebral or spinal origin, common in pathologies such as stroke, cerebral palsy and spinal cord injuries. There are a number of treatment resources available, including: Kinesiotherapy, Bobath Neuroevolutive Concept, cryotherapy, Pediasuit ™ Method and pharmacological treatments such as botulinum toxin type A, baclofen, and the herbal medicine Ziclague ® which is the bioproduct extracted from essential oil Alpinia Zerumbet (OEAz). OBJECTIVE: The aim of this integrative review was to synthesize the literature research published since 2009 util May 2020, reporting the effects of Alpinia Zerumbet essential oil on spasticity. METHODS: For this study, the integrative literature review method was applied in order to synthesize the research published in Portuguese and English, for the construction of the theme through the PICO strategy, the following research question was produced: "OASz has a beneficial effect on spasticity?" and we tried to answer it by reviewing the databases, Google Scholar, Scielo, Pubmed, LILACS. RESULTS: 50 articles were identified in the databases. After applying the exclusion criteria, a total of 4 articles were included in the study. Evidencing that OEAz associated with physiotherapy significantly reduces spasticity. CONCLUSION: It was evidenced that OEAz brings benefits in reducing spasticity when associated with physical therapy.
