Exposure to ultraviolet rays by workers who perform their work in the open environment is unavoidable, however it is often neglected by their employers, the government and regulatory agencies. For this reason, the consequences and the main effects on workers life and health that are exposed to these rays must be analysed and discussed, as well as preventive measures, rules that regulate this type of work, the main protection equipment and other measures that may prevent any kind of disease or harm to the workers. In this way, this work raises the main aspects of radiation, its characteristics and types, highlighting the ultraviolet rays, mentioning its general aspects in the world and in Brazil and its sources of propagation. Another highlighted item are the diseases originated by the chronic exposition to the ultraviolet rays, from those that manifest on the skin to those manifested on the worker’s eyes. Currently, the regulative rules of the Ministry of Labour and Employment don’t include anything that regulate the limits of tolerance or exposure time to ultraviolet rays, which implies in several negative aspects to the workers, for example, the non-granting concession of the collaborator’s insalubrity additional rights. In this way it is evidenced the urgent need of a critical and watchful look over all the aspects regarding this subject, having the necessity of rules modification and parameters legalization to impose limits to this exposure and the companies’ larger concern and attention with their employees’ health.
