This monograph was prepared by means of bibliographic research, with a focus on the topic relating to firearms and use by public security professionals outside working hours. The research problem was based on the question of public security professionals in carrying firearms in their time off, assessing whether this use is due. Thus, in order to verify the general history of firearms, their legislation and related topics. As specific objectives we list the legislative support that professionals have in using armaments in self-defense, the myths involving firearms, as well as developing a critical and updated analysis, seeking to bring up timely issues and new inquiries about their peculiarities. This monograph provided the perception that the occurrence of convictions lacking technical knowledge, added to the vast dissemination, greatly injured, harmed and will harm the protection of the rights of those who are publicly and in advance "guilty" by the media. It was possible to have the perception of the main legends involving firearms, demonstrating the balance of the use of firearms in the face of aggressors equipped with bladed or firearms. There was consistency in the proportionality and reasonableness of the institute of self-defense, which is essential for firearm holders. Keywords: Firearm; Public security; Self-defense.
