In the south of Santa Catarina there was a region where wealth carne from coal. The ore mined mainly in Criciuma was drained by the Dona Tereza Cristina Railway and shipped at the port of Imbituba. In 1979, the Federal Government decided to install a carbochemical industry in Imbituba to reuse pyrite, transforming it into sulfuric and phosphoric acid, thus consuming the significant tons of tailings that were piled up in open pit deposits. The Indústria Carboquímica Catarinense worked until the 1990s when Fernando Collor de Mello reopened imports and sealed the fate of ICC Imbituba that could not cover foreign competition. In the process of liquidation, the industry had its machinery sold to cover its creditors, was the seat of municipal secretariats during the 2000s, but since then its industrial heritage has been abandoned and degraded in the central region of the municipality. In this context, this work seeks through the architectural Retrofit to transform the abandoned industrial complex into a technological and cultural higher education center, giving new meaning and meaning to the buildings and spaces present there.
