Resumo: Introduction: Leprosy is an infectious disease of compulsory notification in Brazil, a country that occupies the second position worldwide in the number of new cases. The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiological profile of leprosy in Brazil, through the analysis of notified cases in secondary database. Methods: Observational ecological study. All cases reported to Information System for Notifiable Diseases, also known as SINAN, with ICD-10 from A30.0 to A30.9 were studied between the years of 2014 and 2016. Results: 69.071 cases of leprosy were reported during the period, with a resulting prevalence rate of 1,13 per 10.000 people. The highest absolute number of cases occurred in 2014 (1,27 rate). The Central-West region had the higher prevalence rates (3,2 cases per 10.000 people), but the Northeast region leads when it comes to the absolut number of cases. 51,7% of the patients were male. The economically active population was the most affected (58,5%). At the diagnosis, 73,2% of cases were classified as multibacillary and the main clinical form was the dimorph (44,7%). Conclusion: Brazil still has a high number of cases of leprosy, despite the campaigns to eradicate this disease. There are yet significant regional differences in the country, since the cases concentrate in the Central-West, North and Northeast regions. Most of the cases were multibacillary, revealing that the diagnosis is still late and that there is a great amount of circulating bacillus, which warns about the severe consequences of these findings.

Métodos: Estudo observacional do tipo ecológico. Do total, 51,7% eram do sexo masculino.
