DIGITAL LITERACY AND DISTANCE EDUCATION: A CASE STUDY AT THE VIRTUAL UNIVERSITY OF THE STATE OF SÃO PAULO

Resumo: Distance Education (DE) is a teaching modality that has shown an increasing participation in Brazilian higher education in recent years. With the rise of this modality, it is necessary to think about student training that is attentive to the critical, creative and competent use of virtual environments. In this context, this article aims to analyze the profile of digital literacy of students entering the Virtual University of São Paulo. The research has a qualitative character of an exploratory-descriptive nature. The collection instrument used was a questionnaire adapted from the European frame of reference for digital competence - DIGCOMP. DIGCOMP is structured in: (i) dimensions; (ii) areas; (iii) skills and; (iv) levels of proficiency. These factors contribute to understand the level of digital competence that UNIVESP students have. The results show that the students' digital literacy profile is less than ideal. It was found that the profile of incoming students does not, in general, have an adequate level of digital skills necessary for and in distance education. Therefore, it will be up to higher education to promote access to digital technologies and the inclusion of measures that enable the digital literacy of its students, so that, perhaps, there is some equity in the levels of digital skills.

Con el auge de esta modalidad, es necesario pensar en una formación del estudiante atenta al uso crítico, creativo y competente de los entornos virtuales. En este contexto, este artículo tiene como objetivo analizar el perfil de alfabetización digital de los estudiantesque ingresan a la Universidad Virtual de São Paulo. La investigación tiene un carácter cualitativo exploratorio-descriptivo. El instrumento de recolección utilizado fue un cuestionario adaptado del marco europeo de referencia para la competencia digital — DIGCOMP. El DIGCOMP se estructura en: (i) dimensiones; (ii) áreas; (iii) competencias; y (iv) niveles de aptitudes. Estos factores contribuyen a comprender el nivel de competencia digital que tienen los estudiantes que ingresan a la UNIVESP. Los resultados muestran que el perfil de alfabetización digital de los estudiantes es menor que el ideal. Se constató que el perfil de los estudiantes de nuevo ingreso en general no cuenta con un nivel adecuado de competencias digitales necesarias para y en la educación a distancia. Corresponderá, por tanto, a la educación superior promover el acceso a las tecnologías digitales y la inclusión de medidas que posibiliten la alfabetización digital de los estudiantes, para que, quizás, haya cierta equidad en los niveles de competencias digitales. A Educação a Distância (EaD) é uma modalidade de ensino que apresenta uma crescente participação no ensino superior brasileiro nos últimos anos. Com a ascensão desta modalidade, faz-se necessário pensar em uma formação discente atenta para o uso crítico, criativo e competente dos ambientes virtuais. Neste contexto, o presente artigo tem por objetivo analisar o perfil de letramento digital dos alunos ingressantes da Universidade Virtual de São Paulo. A pesquisa tem caráter qualitativo de cunho exploratório-descritivo. O instrumento de coleta utilizado foi um questionário adaptado do quadro europeu de referência para a competência digital – DIGCOMP. O DIGCOMP é estruturado em: (i) dimensões; (ii) áreas; (iii) competências e; (iv) níveis de proficiência. Estes fatores contribuem para compreender o nível de competência digital que os alunos ingressantes da UNIVESP possuem. Os resultados mostram que o perfil de letramento digital dos estudantes está aquém do ideal. Constatou-se que o perfil de alunos ingressantes não possui, de modo geral, um nível adequado das competências digitais necessárias para e na EaD.
