Resumo: This study is a periodontal screening survey of dental students of the Federal University of Bahia. A total of 269 undergraduates, representing a population of 626 students regularly enrolled in the year 2000, aged between 18 and 31 years, 63.56% females and 36.44% males, were examined by a single trained professional using PSR system. The sample was homogeneous for the variable gender and was distributed according to the semesters in university program. The system showed a high intra-examiner reproducibility (Spearman’s correlation, p < 0.0001; r = 1 in sextants S2, S4, S5, S6 and r = 0.96 in S1, S3). PSR code 0 was found in 21.93% of the population, whereas the most prevalent one was found to be PSR code 2 (60.22%) followed by PSR code 3 (9.67%), PSR code 1 (6.69%) and PSR code 4 (1.49%). No significant differences were found between the semesters in university program for any PSR code (p > 0.05). The results suggest that the young population examined needs dental care mainly for oral hygiene and that the academic environment exerted no significant influence on their periodontal conditions evaluated by means of PSR.
